For the last 18 months the Community Food Growers Network (CFGN), Capital Growth, Women’s Environmental Network (WEN), Federation of City Farms & Gardens and Just Space have collaborated on producing London Plan policy proposals to support community food production and projects in the capital.

The policies have been shaped by the needs of organisations across the London community food sector and have been edited based on feedback at the ‘Future of London’s food system’ event in February 2016.

The proposals are aimed to support and expand the multiple benefits of the community food sector which can help to meet GLA strategic outputs such as:

  • mental and physical health
  • job creation
  • access to nutritious food
  • training opportunities
  • low environmental impact
  • resilient local economies

The policy proposals will be launched at the City Hall event ‘Towards a resilient food system for London’ on Thursday 17th of November 2016 with speakers from some of London’s leading organisations in the sector.

Speakers will present the policy proposals and focus on different case studies outlining the various social and environmental outputs from community food projects and how these can be achieved through partnerships with the GLA and borough council partnerships.  Speakers include:

  • Deirdre Woods – Community Food Growers Network (CFGN) & BBC Cook of the Year 2016
  • Clare Joy – Organiclea
  • Julie Brown – Growing Communities
  • Robert Biel – UCL
  • Kate Metcalf – Women’s Environmental Network (WEN)
  • Sarah Williams & Maddie Guerlain – Capital Growth
  • Susie Crome – London Borough of Tower Hamlets Public Health
  • Babu Bhattacherjee – Director of Communities and Neighbourhoods, Poplar HARCA housing association
